Copy of letter from John McMillan, surveyor general, to Deputy Douglass, Buctouche. – 16 July 1863. – 1 p. of textual records. McMillan directs Douglass to survey an additional tract of 10,000 acres of land near the Buctouche River for French and other settlers (Rhomboid tract). In his postscript, he notes that Bishop Sweeny is to have the management and control of settling the surveyed lands. Copy of letter from John McMillan, surveyor general’s office, Fredericton, N.B., to His Lordship Bishop Sweeny, Saint John, N.B. – 28 November 1862. – 1 p. of textual records. McMillan refers to Bishop Sweeny’s letter of 23 November “intimating the desire of a large number of French Acadiens to get a Block of Land surveyed for them in the Counties of Kent and Westmorland for actual settlement”. McMillan agrees with the Bishop that young people need land of their own, and he sets outs the steps he plans to take to comply with the Bishop’s request. Copy of letter from John McMillan, surveyor general’s office, Fredericton, N.B., to the Rev. Mr. Lefrance, Memramcook North. – 28 November 1862. – 1 p. of textual records. McMillan acknowledges receipt of Lefrance’s letter of 24 November in which he states his desire “to establish a French Colony of settlers on the River Buctouche and neighborhood” and requests “to have a block of land laid off” for that purpose immediately. McMillan states that he has just received and replied to a letter from Bishop Sweeny on that subject, and sets out the steps he plans to take on the matter.
